ZESA Rate Watch

The first units you buy each month are the cheapest. We’ll tell you when you’re past them.

ZESA charges in steps: the first 50 units of a calendar month are the cheapest, the next 50 cost a bit more, and so on up six bands — then everything resets on the 1st. Most people never know which step they’re on. We watch the real cost of units from the tokens people buy here, and say something before you pay.

How ZESA’s monthly steps work Six ascending steps. The first 50 units you buy in a calendar month are on the bottom, cheapest step. The next 50 are one step up. Then 100 more, dearer again — six steps in all. Every unit after 400 in the same month is on the top step, about three times the price of the bottom one. On the 1st the meter goes back to the bottom step and starts again. So the date does not set the price; the count does. On the 1st, back to the bottom step 1–50 51–100 101–200 201–300 301–400 401+ units units units units units units Cheapest About 3× the bottom step

Step widths are the published band sizes, set by ZERA and applied by ZETDC. Heights are indicative, not to scale.

What units cost here

Still learning this month’s rate.

We work out the cost per unit from tokens bought here, and we haven’t seen enough this month to say anything useful yet. The steps still apply: the first units you buy each month are the cheapest, and they reset on the 1st. Check back in a few days, or buy now if you need to — your purchase helps us learn.

What units really cost right now

Our estimate of dollars-per-unit this week, learned from actual purchases — so when the tariff moves without an announcement, you’ll see it.

A nudge at checkout

“It’s the 28th and this meter has already bought this month — these units are probably in a higher band. Buy enough to reach the 1st, and schedule the big one for the 1st.”

A schedule that knows the calendar

Put the month’s ZESA on the 1st. Only we can do the schedule part.

These are our estimates from purchases made here — not official ZESA or ZETDC figures. The exact tariff is set by ZERA; we’re telling you what we’ve seen.

How it works

Three steps. Once.

1 · Add a person

Add a person

A phone number for airtime, a meter number for ZESA, and a name so you know who’s who. Ten seconds.

2 · Choose the day

3 · Keep the wallet topped up

Keep the wallet topped up

Top up once by card, EcoCash or OneMoney. On the day, it goes out with your message on the SMS. If your wallet’s short, nothing is sent and nothing is owed — it shows as skipped and goes out next time once you’ve topped up.

FAQ

Questions people ask

Do I need an account?

No. To send airtime or buy ZESA once — even for later today or next Friday — just use the box at the top and pay. An account is for schedules that repeat, your wallet, and MyFamilyTime. You sign in with a code sent to WhatsApp or SMS; there’s no password to remember.

Which networks and what can I buy?

Airtime for Econet, NetOne and Telecel — we work out the network from the number. ZESA prepaid tokens in USD or ZWG. Amounts from $0.30.

Is this legal? Are you ZESA?

We’re not ZESA and we’re not a network. We’re a registered reseller: your airtime and tokens come through the operators’ official channels, the same ones the banks and EcoCash use. The token you get is a normal ZETDC token — 20 digits, typed into the meter like any other.

How does “on the day you choose” work?

For a one-off, choose “Later” in the box, pick a day and time, and pay now — it goes out then. For something that repeats, sign in, add the person, and choose every week, every two weeks or every month; on a date, around payday (the last working day of the month), or on the very last day. We send it at the time you set. You can skip a month, pause, or send it now, any time.

What if the recharge fails?

If you paid from your wallet, the money is back in your wallet automatically. If you paid once-off by EcoCash, OneMoney or card, we refund you to the way you paid — your order reference is on the status page; if you haven’t heard from us within two working days, WhatsApp us with it. If the network takes a moment to confirm, we keep checking and settle it either way; you’re never charged twice for one order.

What if my wallet is empty when a schedule is due?

Nothing is sent and nothing is owed. It shows as “Skipped — wallet low” on your family page, and goes out at the next scheduled time once you’ve topped up.

Where does the ZESA rate come from? Is it official?

No — and we say so wherever we show it. ZESA’s tariff is set by ZERA in six monthly steps. What we show is our estimate of the real cost per unit this week, worked out from the tokens people actually bought here (units received ÷ dollars paid). It’s for deciding when to buy, not a price list. The band we think your meter is on only counts purchases made through us; if you’ve bought elsewhere this month, tell us and we’ll adjust.

Is ZESA really cheaper on the 1st?

Not exactly — it’s cheaper for the first units you buy each month, whatever the date. If you haven’t bought this month, today is as good as the 1st. If you already have, the next units cost more until the 1st, when the steps reset. That’s why we suggest buying just enough to reach the 1st, then the month’s supply on the 1st.

Does it cost extra?

No platform fee for personal use. You pay the airtime or token amount plus the normal payment processing fee on card and mobile-money payments. Teams and API accounts are priced separately.

Can my brother and I both look after mum?

Yes. Each of you sets up your own schedule for her under your own account — a $5 from you on the 1st and a $5 from him on the 15th, for example. Every top-up keeps a receipt you can screenshot into the family group.

Will she know it’s from me?

Yes. Add a message and it goes on the SMS with the airtime — “From Tino” or whatever you like. Your name, not a shortcode.

Send it now. Or set it for the 30th, and stop being the one who remembers.

One-off with no account, or sign in with a WhatsApp code and set up the people you look after in about a minute.
